The northern zone is bordered by Nicaragua to the north, the Guanacaste, Tilarán, and Central Moutain ranges to the south and the Sarapiquí River to the west .

The western part of the Central Valley is an important agricultural region, where the coffee bean reigns.

Just outside of town are a number of interesting and fun places to visit. Zoo de Aves and Butterfly Farm, both located in La Garita are parks with dozens of different native species of rare birds and butterflies, and a host of other animals.

If you visit Alajuela you will probably see cattle fairs and a cattle marketing center. Costa Rica's main international airport, Juan Santamaria, is also located in Alajuela.

There are many other beautiful places to visit in this province, such as La Fortuna in San Carlos, La Garita, and, of course, the majestic Arenal and Poas Volcanos.
